Snowfall

It was a snowy morning when Mother revealed her true identity

Welcome to Wednesday’s flash fiction wherein I write as part of a group based on the same short prompt and post them. Here’s my contribution.

Quiet. I’d always found winter quiet, but never like this. Reaching out I touched the flake suspended closest to me. It melted. Oh Mother.

Her age, the cares of the farm, everything was gone. The snowflakes coalesced around her. A cloak blinding to see. Winter’s radiance and wrath.

“Did you think I would let you take another?” The words were a snowfall’s whisper, one as cutting as the air’s chill. Mathak crawled backward, terror freezing on his face as snow encased him.

Closing my eyes, I covered my ears. How had I missed this? What was she? What was I?

Don’t forget to read the other’s takes on the prompt. More stories go up throughout the day. Be sure to check our page on Facebook for updates as everything becomes available: WonHundred Words.
