Quest’s Pets

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: You cannot bring your pet along

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

“You must be joking.” Darman rounded on Jadeen.

She stepped back, blinking at him. “Joking? About what?”

Darman gestured to the ridged case at her feet. “You cannot bring your pet along.”

Jadeen blinked again, glanced down to the case, and then to Tillan who leaned against a nearby tree. “He’s bringing his lute.”

“He’s a minstrel.” Darman gestured to Tillan. “We need his skills to sneak into the Suntide Festival.”

Jadeen blinked and stared at her case. “Well, I need Mistfix.”

“And I need more patience.” He dragged his hand down his face, twisting the word need viciously. “We don’t always get what we want.” He clipped off the T sound.

“I need Mistfix.” Tillan slipped around the tree as Jadeen stamped.

Darman glanced after the bard, shook his head, and refocused on Jadeen. “You can’t take your cat,” he snapped.

Jadeen tilted her head to the side. “May cat?” Her tone changed to bemused.

“Yes!” Darman jutted his finger at the case. “Your cat. Your pet! It ain’t coming.”

Jadeen broke into laughter and tugging at the ties holding the case closed. “This isn’t my cat.”

The gate swung open, and a lithe, black creature slithered out, wrapping itself about Jadeen’s arm. Settling its head on Jadeen shoulder’s, it stared at Darman. A jut of flame blazed from the creature to the tree Tillan had abandoned. “I left the cat at home. Mistfix is far more dangerous.” Jadeen said.

Darman gulped, stepping back. “You can bring your pet.”
