Never Joining

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: He ate knowing it would be his last meal

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

One thousand years lost among the stars hadn’t been enough. Alone, Lonnie stared into the deep vibrance of space. Subtle to startling, he’d seen expanse after expanse.

Never settling.

Never joining the others.

They’d trickled away. Finding locations to meld their souls. Spirits in the sky, guiding those yet to come.

Lonnie had continued searching until the engines ground to a halt and the ship drifted with unending entropy.

Until the planet appeared.

Until gravity.

When the end came, he ate knowing it would be his last meal. Soon his soul would meld with the ground. But not in peace.
