Dreamless

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: Last night I dreamt.

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

“Last night I dreamt.”

Shoving herself straighter, Jeanne pulled herself out of a slump. “We’ve all been daydreaming about home,” she said. “That why we gotta get this problem resolved.”

They hated being trapped on this ship. Parked in this sector where no one could explain why or how dreams REM were repressed. Trapped really.

But as regions had gone mad in their sleep, here had become a refugee where they attempted to work out what attacked their sleep. Answers everyone, everywhere desperately needed.

The days had worn into weeks, and Jeanne was as ready as the rest to be out. Her mind had ground to a halt, refusing to process more data. Data she had to process to help resolve the sleep attacks. Attacks they had to stop so they could dream without going mad.

Shaking herself, Jeanne pulled her mind from the loop and pushed her attention back to Mack.

Mack stared at her, shaking his head slowly. “No, Jeanne. I dreamed last night.”

When the meaning of his words churned their way through her mind, her eyes widened. Jeanne swore. Could whatever reach them here now?
