The familiar can change in a moment, viewed from an angle we don’t recognize or haven’t considered. This past week, I ventured off to California to cheer on this year’s winners of Writers and Illustrators of the Future, and before the awards gala, I found myself pondering a different perspective. That of looking back.
For years I had noticed the ceiling, the stage displays, and all the different features designed to create an epic experience for the winners. However, in the back were mirrors which reflected it all from a different perspective. A display as dazzling as that up front.
The perspective concept was carried through CL Fors, Illustration winner, interview following the final day of the Workshop. Then she spoke of how she had also come to the gala for years but had not expected what a profound experience it would be viewing the event from the perspective of a winner.
This reminded me of part of what I’ve known about Writers and Illustrators of the future, they seek stories from perspectives. As noted by Jody Lynn Nye in her introduction to this year’s anthology: “bring us your fresh ideas or innovative approach to a classic theme.”
Illustrations and stories never seen before.
Stories and illustrations from creators at the beginning of their career.
Creations that revealed the world from unique perspectives not seen before.
For those seeking to win the contests still themselves, these tales and illustrations offer a glimpse into what Writers and Illustrators of the Future is looking for.
For those searching for new stories to entrance them with visions of worlds beyond our reality, be sure to pick up a copy of the anthology to enjoy.
Either way, these creators off a view unseen before. Meet them as they begin their careers.
