A Wandering Life

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: Tomatoes make great weapons

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Tobias dropped the heavy pack on the table before Kierda. She stepped back, eyes widening at the girth of it. Tobias suppressed his grin with practice. He wondered what she would think if she tried lifting it.

Returning to the table, she poked the pack hesitantly. “I assume there’s space for my harp?” She glanced at him.

Tobias waved the suggestion away dismissively. “Saints, no! A terrible idea that. The thing would be crushed!” Leaning forward, he pointed out loops on the side. “You could attach it here, but from there it will forever smack your arm as you walk.” He shuddered dramatically. “The bruises.”

She gasped softly. “Bruises?”

He nodded and nudged the pack toward her. “Go on try the weight. The road is long between here and Fallenreach.”

Kierda reached toward the pack. Her hands closed hesitantly on the long strap.

Tobias snapped dramatically. “No. I forgot the tomato cleaning supplies from Mistress Billsden.” He turned away quickly.

“Supplies for tomatoes?” Keirda called after him. “I’m not going to be growing tomatoes. I’ll be singing. I’ll be playing.”

Tobias at her. Forcing the grin from his face, he adopted his practiced stern look. “Tomatoes make great weapons against minstrels. Not every performance will please.”

Kierda swallowed, a slow exaggerated movement. “Upon consideration, I think I should remain here and train a while longer. Perhaps a permanent posting?”

“Excellent!” Tobias swept the pack from the table ignoring as the rocks within jangled. They’d served their purpose.
