Baked Enthusiasm

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: The bakery is that way

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

“The bakery is that way.” The boy didn’t bother to look up from the shoes he polished, merely gestured up the street before I finished the shop’s name. I followed his directions, and, rounding the last corner, I whistled softly. Samina hadn’t even tried for plausible deniability.

People swarmed the bakery, loitering along the walk as they awaited entry. I glanced at the doors, pondering striding straight through them. I had the right but didn’t fancy the crowd turning mob on me.

Inserting myself at the end, I tapped the building next to me. A tone rushed through the wall toward the bakery. I smiled, pleased with the demanding note.

A girl darted from the shop and sped to my side. Her light blue dress fluttered in her wake. “This way, sir.” She gestured for me to follow.

I ignored the glowers and mutters following us. No one dared to outright question Samina’s girl though. They slumped back into weary waiting as we disappeared into the shop.

The customers disregarded me as the girl guided me past the ovens, and into a small, quiet room. Samina took a bite of her pastry as I entered.

“Samina,” I sat across from her.

“Carlon.” She took another bite.

“You know why I’m here?” She didn’t bother meeting my gaze. “Stop baking enchanted pastries, Samina. The other bakers are already complaining.”

She dropped the pastry sending flakes skittering over the table. “Let them.”

I sighed. So much for her being reasonable.
