Beneath the Green

He itched to clear the ground, to look out and see nothing

What is WonHundred Word Wednesdays? It’s when a group of amazing authors and I write 100 word stories all based on the same short prompt and post them. All the variations are fun to read. Here is my entry for the week.

Stone rang as the sheriff’s gauntlet struck the keep’s wall. He itched to clear the ground, to look out and see nothing.

“Sir.” The voice was tentative. Testing his mood, no doubt.

He glowered at the guard. “Out with it.”

“Sir, your request has been denied.” The man stepped backward, bobbing his head in apology. No further explanation or reasoning from John. Just a refusal. As he’d expected. The guard fled with his annoyed dismissal.

The fool didn’t see the Sherwood’s threat. It’s refuge. Their enemies mocked them all from beneath the green. No wonder the peasants thought them merry.

Don’t forget to read the other’s takes on the prompt. More stories go up throughout the day. Be sure to check our page on Facebook for updates as everything becomes available: WonHundred Words.
