Inheritance Note

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: He wrote a long letter

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

“What did he leave me.” The clipped words told Ger his sister Trina wouldn’t be stalled.

Their father’s executor leaned to retrieve something from his desk. “He left you a letter.”

“A letter?” Dan, Ger’s brother, asked incredulously. He turned to Trina and sneered. “He wrote you a letter.”

“All of you,” the executor clarified. He set three bulging files on the desk. Each bore a name and their father’s unbroken seal.

“Letters?” Trina and Dan sputtered.

Ger said nothing, considering the letters.

“He wrote long letters,” the executor said apologetically.

“What of his fortunes?” Trina asked.

Dan rushed on. “The prototypes.”

Ger glanced at Dan. The man gripped the desk. Of course. He wanted, no, expected the prototypes.

As did Trina from her thinly veiled rage.

Ger glanced back before either noticed his attention. The executor shook his head. “All assets are frozen until further instruction.”

Dan sprung up, grabbing his envelope. “What further instructions. He’s dead.” He rushed from the room with Trina behind.

Ger picked up his letter. “Can I read it here?” he asked.

The executor nodded. “I’ll give you some privacy.” The door clicking closed told him he was alone.

Breaking the seal, he sorted through a hundred plus, handwritten pages. Typical dad.

Ger flipped through the pages. Stories from his childhood or his dad’s. Until nearly the end.

Ger,

I knew you’d be the one to actually read. Here’s your instructions for unlocking the vault. Act quick in case Trina or Dan surprises me.
