On Such a Night

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: No one stirred on such a night

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Darkness had taken a break for the night. Instead, the sky glowed an eerie red, trapping Grace within the cave’s confines. The closest cavern when the horns had echoed the length of the canyon.

No one stirred on such a night.

Grace paced in the entrance and wrung her hands. She had to.

“Pacing won’t make the deluge pass quicker.” Grace paused, glancing to see which resident had spoken. She assumed the deep and gravelly voice matched with heavily wrinkled and frowning face.

Inclining her head, she forced herself to perch on a log near the entrance. “Pardons, elder,” she said. “I hadn’t meant to disturb you.”

Grace hadn’t known what would or would not disturb the half dozen lazing about the cave. She didn’t know any of them, but when the sky turned red, company didn’t matter. Only shelter.

Nothing mattered. Not even a headlong dash up the canyon to fetch the healer.

Glancing from the old man, she glanced at the stalky young one that and grabbed her and hauled her within, disregarding her cries that she had to go.

Grace turned from them and glowered out in the red.

“Scowling won’t help either,” another said.

“Nor will waiting,” Grace said glumly. She turned back and wished the attack would fade so she could reach the healers. Wizards who could heal those collapsed by the weight of magic all about them. Magic which caused the skies and death.

Magic. Their hope and betrayer.
