Perfection Lost

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: Until I uncovered the truth

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Xanda leaned against the doorframe regarding me with a scowl. I would have risen to greet her, but the manacles didn’t afford me even that much movement. Instead, I did the only sensible thing I could. I grace her with my best scowl.

She sniffed and pushed herself from the frame. Striding slowly toward me she placed a hand on my shoulder and stared into my eyes. “What am I going to do with you Astram?” She sighed at the end as if she’d reached her limit.

“I vote release me,” I said.

Xanda scowled and stepped back. “To do what?”

I smirked. “To finish what I started, of course.”

Huffing, Xanda shook her head. “You would undermine me?” She pressed a hand to her chest. “Astram, you’ve been my most loyal companion for nearly five years.”

“Until I uncovered the truth.” I’d expected heat in my words, but they were dead. Five years of lies, and I felt nothing.

“Truth?” she scoffed. I felt the glimmer of a reaction to that. “What is truth?” Shaking her head, she turned from me and withdrew two steps. “I offered better than truth. I offered.”

Stopping, Xanda paused before glancing over her shoulder at him. She played with a smile, her eyes closing softly. “I offered perfection,”

Anger flared in me. The five years stolen to the haze of her perfection. I rammed to my feet, ignoring the manacles yanking my hands back. “Perfect emptiness!” I screamed.

Xanda laughed.
