Resonance

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: He painted the songs

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

The air hummed with resonance.

Destain watched from the lone seat in the dome’s center as covering whirled from opaque to sheer. The stars opened before him, stretching in endless pinpoints of light.

Music joined the sights, swirling about him adding to the resonance. Reylina’s presence, unseen but heard, affected his view with her melodies.

Destain raised one hand from the arm rest of his chair. His fingers glowed as the SimGlove he wore activating. A hesitant strand of color followed his motion.

Leaning back, Destain closed his eyes. Reylina’s melody surged through him with the removal of other distractions. His hands danced, and his fingers wove through space. His other hand joined the first.

Without seeing, Destain painted the song.

The last strains faded away. Destain allowed his hands to drift back to the armrests and opened his eyes.

Colors danced before him. Bold colors in thick streaks. Delicate hues in vanishing swirls. Together they mingled with the chilling beauty of space creating a resonance with a past he basked in for a moment.

For that moment.

For only a moment.

He wrapped his fingers against the chair. The light vanished as the gloves lost power. Ephemeral. Destain kept his eyes unfocused a moment trying to hold onto the last remnants of color.

The dome swirled back to opaque at Destain’s command, sealing himself off from beauty. A beauty he could no more touch than Reylina.

Gone.

As was the song’s creator.
