Was it a knock that had woken her?

What is WonHundred Word Wednesdays? It’s when a group of amazing authors and I write 100 word stories all based on the same short prompt and post them. All the variations are fun to read. Here is my entry for the week and Happy Halloween everyone!

Silence beat in her ears. Her eyes, unfocused from sleep, peered at the darkened surroundings. The furnishings promised menace and murmured of secrets. Her heart throbbed as she wrangled her mind from sleep’s slur.

Was it a knock that had woken her? Clutching her blanket about her, she pondered the possibility while rising from the bed. Impossible, the nearest house was twenty miles. Besides, no one paid social visits this late.

Her bare feet chilled against the wood floor. Her skin crawled. The need to see rivaled breathing. As she reached for the light switch, the shadows reached back.
