The Wordsmith

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: He liked to play with words

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

“What can I say? He likes to play with words.” I brushed my hand over the harsh metal of the table, not raising my gaze to meet the inspectors. There was no good in doing that.

The man’s chair creaked beneath him before he spoke. “He likes to play with words? You’ve got nothing more than that?” I could hear the incredulousness in his voice.

I shrugged and continued swiping at the immaculate table.

“He left you behind. He left you to be captured. And you’re still loyal?” The man’s appalled shock was apparent in his voice

I looked up harshly meeting his gaze. He flinched back from me. “Do you think there is anything you can do to me?”

The room went dead silent after that. There was nothing we both knew. There was nothing they could do.

Who could challenge the creations of the Wordsmith, and what was I but his best creation?

I looked back at the blank metal table. And I saw words. Words which told me how to free myself. I would be back with the Wordsmith by morning.
